Six people have been stabbed to death at a busy Sydney shopping centre, with a nine-month-old baby among those critically injured.

A senior policewoman who happened to be nearby shot dead the assailant, who was captured on video running through Westfield shopping centre in Bondi Junction wearing a green and gold Australian rugby jersey and wielding a large knife. Police believe they are aware of the attacker’s identity and are ruling out terrorism as a motivation.

Anthony Albanese, the prime minister, said she was a “hero” whose actions had “no doubt saved lives.”
