VALLEY CENTER — 

A 37-year-old construction worker directing traffic was fatally struck by a vehicle that then fled the scene in Valley Center Monday morning, according to a California Highway Patrol official.

Dispatchers received a call around 7 a.m. of the crash on Cool Valley Road east of Cole Grand Road, according to Officer Hunter Gerber.

A construction flagman, directing traffic near a construction site, was struck by a Toyota Corolla, Gerber said. The sedan fled before officers arrived.

Paramedics transported the construction worker to a hospital, where he died. His name has not been released pending notification of his family.

Around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, CHP officers found the alleged driver of the Toyota. He was booked into Vista Jail on multiple charges including felony hit and run.

It was unknown if alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. The cause of the crash was under investigation.
